چکیده

To my wife and children for their support and sacrifice ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I give my sincere gratitude and appreciation to my academic advisor Dr. Kamal Sarabandi for his guidance, patience, and encouragement during my Ph.D. journey. I was very fortunate to have him as my advisor. Dr. Sarabandi's broad academic background and positive attitude towards his field of study and his students was always an inspiration to me. I always was able to revive my energy due to his encouragement whenever I got frustrated. I also would like to thank all my committee members for their time and consideration. I owe many thanks to Dr. Adib Nashashibi, who introduced me to millimeter-wave polarimetric radar, and to Dr. Leland Pierce, who always had answers to my questions related to computers and radar image processing. I also want to thank Mark D. Casciato for his kind help and proofreading, including this dissertation. My time in the Rad Lab was enjoyable and memorable due to the Rad Lab staff and my Rad Lab friends. I would also like to express my appreciation to my Korean buddies for their help and friendship including Dr. and Yongshik Lee. I apologize to those people whose names I've missed here; my thanks goes to you nonetheless for any help you have given me to make my work easier. iii I give my special appreciation to my mother-in-law, Y.J. Jung for her love and patience. She did not miss a single day of praying for me for many years. Finally I would like to thank and acknowledge my family: my wife, Mehyun L. Park and my children, Jeeyun, and Phillipe. I would not have been able to complete this journey towards my Ph.D. degree without their love and many sacrifices.

Millimeter-Wave Radar Phenomenology of Power Lines and a Polarimetric Detection Algorithm

In this paper, the radar phenomenology of highvoltage power lines and cables is studied for examining the feasibility of detecting power lines along the path of a low-flying aircraft using a millimeter-wave radar system. For this purpose, polarimetric backscatter measurements of power line samples of different diameters and strand arrangements were performed over a wide range of incidence angle...

Extraction of Power Line Maps from Millimeter-Wave Polarimetric SAR Images

Radar backscatter of power lines has lower values than those of the surrounding ground clutter when the power line is oriented at an off-normal direction with respect to the radar line of sight. For power lines, the traditional detection algorithms that are commonly based on the statistics of the backscatter power of the clutter and target result in excessive false-alarm rates due to very low s...

SPRI: Simulator of Polarimetric Radar Images

SPRI consists of a suite of image processing programs for producing realistic millimeter-wave (MMW) radar images artificially on a workstation. The heart of the simulation approach is a polarimetric Rayleigh clutter simulator coupled to a clutter database. The simulator produces high resolution single-look polarimetric images. Hard targets can then be embedded into this clutter map, and the res...

Polarimetric Detection of Buried Objects by Fm-cw Radar

The subsurface radar suffers from strong clutter from surface and severe wave attenuation in the underground. This paper presents a unique countermeasure to these problems using a polarimetric FM-CW radar equipped with equivalent time sensitivity control (STC) technique. We first apply the polarimetric filtering principle to suppress surface clutter, then, use an equivalent STC technique suited...

Low Grazing Incidence Millimeter-Wave Scattering Models and Measurements for Various Road Surfaces

Systematic characterization of the scattering behavior of traffic targets, clutter, and their associated interactions are required in order to design and assess the performance of millimeter-wave-based sensors for automated highway system (AHS) applications. In this paper, the polarimetric radar backscatter response of various road surfaces is investigated both theoretically and experimentally....
